To convert a Citibank statement PDF to Excel, download the PDF from Statements in Citi Online, upload it, check that it balances, then download a CSV that opens in Excel: one row per transaction, one signed Amount column and the running balance. Free preview, no sign-up.
Utilly reads every transaction, then checks that opening balance + transactions = closing balance. You'll see Balanced ✓ or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.
Citibank checking statements list each account's activity in one table with Amount Subtracted and Amount Added columns and a Balance column, starting from an Opening Balance (or, on older statements, a Beginning Balance line above the table). Utilly reads which column each amount sits in, so money out comes out negative and money in positive, joins the merchant and category lines under card purchases, and checks the rows against the account's own opening and closing balance.
Works with Citibank checking and savings statements. Layout tested: Amount Subtracted / Amount Added columns, several accounts on one statement.
Excel is the fastest way to review a statement, tag categories, or hand a clean transaction list to your accountant.
Short answer: download the statement PDF from Statements in Citi Online, upload it above, and check that it shows Balanced ✓. You get a CSV that opens in Excel with one row per transaction, Citibank's Amount Subtracted and Amount Added columns combined into one signed Amount column, and the running balance. Citi keeps up to 24 months of statements ready to download online.
A Citibank checking statement opens with a summary of every account on it (Value of Accounts, or a Relationship Summary on older statements) and the fees for your account package. Then each account gets its own Checking Activity table: Date, Description, Amount Subtracted, Amount Added and Balance. Citi often puts checking and savings on the same statement, one table after the other.
| On the statement | In the Excel file |
|---|---|
| Header: "September 1 - September 30, 2026", Page 1 of 3, the account package and the last 4 digits of the account | Not copied as rows. Older statements print dates as "12/09" with no year, so each row takes its year from the statement period; on a statement that runs from December into January, December rows get the earlier year. Only the last 4 digits of the account number are kept, for the .QBO account ID. |
| Value of Accounts (or Relationship Summary) and the Account Fees and Charges box | Not rows. The fee amounts in that box aren't counted; a fee you were actually charged appears in the activity table, and that row is read. |
| Opening Balance row (newer statements) or "Beginning Balance: $1,925.40" / "Ending Balance:" lines above the table (older statements) | Not rows. They are the two numbers the balance check uses. |
| Amounts in the Amount Subtracted column: card and PIN purchases, ATM withdrawals, Zelle Debit, ACH Electronic Debit, "Check # 1052", "Other Debit", Monthly Service Fee | Negative amounts. Citi prints them without a minus sign, so Utilly reads which column each amount sits in. |
| Amounts in the Amount Added column: ACH Electronic Credit, deposits, transfers in, fee refunds, interest | Positive amounts. A percentage in the description ("Annual Percentage Yield Earned 0.01%") stays in the description and isn't read as the amount. |
| Card purchases with a second date and time ("Debit Card Purchase 08/30 11:42a #4417"), and the merchant or a category ("Supermarkets") on the lines below | One row, dated with the date in the Date column. The lines below are joined into the description, category included. |
| Balance column: on every row on newer statements, only on the last row of each day on older ones | Copied as printed. Rows where Citi prints no balance have an empty Balance cell; we don't make balances up. |
| "Total Subtracted/Added", Closing Balance row, "Checking Continued" page headers, the Eastern Time note | Skipped. Rows on every page come out as one list. |
| A second account on the same statement (savings, a second checking account) | Not mixed in. The file is the first account, checked against its own balances, and the results page tells you the statement has more accounts. |
What this is based on: test statements built in Citibank's current and older checking layouts above, with made-up names and transactions, plus a 2024 Citigold checking statement that was filed publicly as a court exhibit: its first account read 2 of 2 rows and balanced, and the second account on it read all 31 rows to that account's closing balance. We don't link to it because it contains a person's details. We haven't run every Citibank statement style through it: CitiBusiness checking, Citi Private Bank and statements in other currencies haven't been tested, and a statement scanned or rotated before it was saved won't read. That's why the balance check runs on every file: if yours doesn't balance, you see the difference before paying.

| Column | Contents |
|---|---|
| Date | Year first (2026-09-01), so Excel reads it as a date whatever your regional settings. |
| Description | The Citibank description in one cell, with the merchant and category lines joined in. Card numbers' last 4 (#4417) and reference numbers stay in, which helps when you match against a bank feed. |
| Amount | Positive for Amount Added, negative for Amount Subtracted. =SUM() over the column equals Closing Balance minus Opening Balance. |
| Balance | The running balance Citi prints, empty where it prints none. |
Want money in and money out in two columns again? Use =MAX(C2,0) and =MAX(-C2,0). Want to group spending? The category Citi prints under card purchases is at the end of the description, so a filter on "Restaurant" or "Supermarkets" finds them.
| You need | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Recent checking or savings statements | Statements in Citi Online or the Citi Mobile app. Citi says you can immediately access up to 24 months of online statements, as PDFs. |
| Older statements | Request them as archived statements in Citi Online. Citi says archived statements become available within 24-48 hours of your request. |
| One statement per account | Citi's account agreement says your accounts may be combined on one statement, based on things like ownership, titles, paperless preferences and mailing address, and that under certain circumstances you can ask to separate them. Each statement period runs 28 to 31 days. |
| Business accounts | Citi says its paperless statement service isn't available for business accounts managed through Citi Online. If all you have is a paper statement, a scan of it won't read in Utilly yet. |
| Check images | Citi's agreement says images of cancelled checks presented within the past 18 months are available in Citi Online. They aren't part of the statement's transaction list, and the check itself comes out as a "Check # …" row. |
Sources: Citibank: Online Bank Statements (24 months online, PDF, archived statements in 24-48 hours, no paperless for business accounts in Citi Online), Citibank: Consumer Deposit Account Agreement, effective Nov 20, 2025 (section 4, Account Statements: combined statements, separate statements on request, 28-to-31 day periods, 18 months of check images). Checked Oct 25, 2026.
If Citi Online lets you download the activity you need for the right dates, use that. For older months, or when all you have is the statements a client sent you, start from the statement PDF. The same Utilly conversion that gives you Excel also includes:
| You use | Download |
|---|---|
| QuickBooks Online or a Desktop version with Web Connect | The .QBO, or the 3-column QuickBooks Online CSV. See Citibank to QuickBooks. |
| QuickBooks Desktop without Web Connect | The .IIF (File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files). |
| Quicken Classic for Windows | The QIF (File → File Import → QIF File). See bank statement PDF to QIF. |
| Xero | The Xero CSV or the OFX. See Citibank to Xero. |
One credit covers every format of that statement. If a bank feed or an earlier download already brought in some of the same dates, start the PDF months where that stopped so nothing comes in twice.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No transactions found | The PDF is probably a scan or a photo. Download the statement again from Statements in Citi Online. |
| "This PDF is password protected" | Save a copy without the password, or download the statement again, and upload that. |
| Not balanced | You see the difference before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, we refund it. |
| The results page says the statement has more accounts | The file holds the first account. Email us if you need the other accounts' rows too, or ask Citi for separate statements per account. |
| Some rows have no balance | That's how older Citibank statements print them: one balance per day. Sort by Date, and the last row of each day carries the balance. |
| It's a Citi credit card statement | Use the Citi credit card statement to Excel page: cards use a different layout, with Trans. and Post dates. |
| You already have a CSV from Citi Online, not a PDF | No PDF needed: the CSV to QBO and CSV to Xero converters read it. |
| You need several months in one sheet | Convert each statement on its own so each gets its own balance check, then paste the rows into one sheet. Every file has the same columns. |

Preview any statement free. A $9 pack unlocks 5 full statements in every format, with no expiry and no subscription. Bookkeepers with many clients can go unlimited for $19/month. See pricing.
You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).
Copying from a PDF usually scrambles columns, merges descriptions and drops minus signs. Utilly keeps each transaction on one row with a signed amount, and the balance check tells you nothing was missed.
No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.
Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.
You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.
Citi's Online Bank Statements page says you can immediately access up to 24 months of statements online, as PDFs. For older months, Citi says archived statements become available within 24-48 hours of your request. Citi also says paperless statements aren't available for business accounts managed through Citi Online.
The first account on the statement, usually your checking, checked against its own Opening and Closing Balance. The other accounts' rows aren't mixed in, and the results page tells you the statement has more accounts. Citi's account agreement says accounts can be combined on one statement and that, under certain circumstances, you can ask for separate statements for each account.
Citibank prints every amount without a sign, in either the Amount Subtracted or the Amount Added column. Utilly reads which column each amount sits in, so Amount Subtracted comes out negative and Amount Added positive, and the rows are then checked against the closing balance.
Older Citibank statements print the balance only on the last transaction of each day, so the other rows that day have an empty Balance cell. Utilly doesn't invent the missing balances. Newer statements print a balance on every row, and the file keeps it.
Yes, through our credit card reader: use the Citi credit card statement to Excel page. Card statements have a transaction date and a post date on each row and are checked against the New Balance. The tests behind this page cover Citibank checking statements.
