1. Download the PDF from Citibank

  1. Sign on at citi.com (Citi Online) or the Citi Mobile app.
  2. Open the checking account and go to Statements.
  3. Choose the statement month and download the PDF.

2. Upload and verify

Utilly reads every transaction, then checks that opening balance + transactions = closing balance. You'll see Balanced ✓ or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.

3. Import into QuickBooks

  1. Download the .QBO (Web Connect) file from your results page.
  2. QuickBooks Online: go to Bank transactions (All apps → Accounting) → Link account ▾ → Upload from file, choose the .QBO file (or the QuickBooks Online CSV, in Intuit's 3-column Date, Description, Amount format) and pick the account.
  3. QuickBooks Desktop (supported versions): Banking → Bank Feeds → Import Web Connect Files, signed in to your Intuit Account. On Desktop 2023 after May 31, 2026, download the .IIF instead.

About Citibank statements

Citibank checking statements list each account's activity in one table with Amount Subtracted and Amount Added columns and a Balance column, starting from an Opening Balance (or, on older statements, a Beginning Balance line above the table). Utilly reads which column each amount sits in, so money out comes out negative and money in positive, joins the merchant and category lines under card purchases, and checks the rows against the account's own opening and closing balance.

Works with Citibank checking and savings statements. Layout tested: Amount Subtracted / Amount Added columns, several accounts on one statement.

Why QuickBooks?

QuickBooks Online can now read a PDF statement with its own AI extraction, but you review it side by side and some files get queued for manual review. QuickBooks Desktop can't read PDFs at all. A .QBO file goes into QuickBooks Online through Upload from file and into supported Desktop versions through Web Connect, and Utilly has already checked it against your statement balances. On Desktop 2023, where Web Connect stopped after May 31, 2026, use the .IIF from the same results page. For QuickBooks Online there's also a CSV in Intuit's 3-column bank upload format, with no Balance column to delete.

On QuickBooks Desktop, especially 2023 after bank feeds stopped, use IIF. If import says File not imported, see IIF import errors and how to fix them, or check the file first with the free IIF file checker.

FAQ

Questions

Can I convert a Citibank statement PDF to QuickBooks (QBO) for free?

You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).

Can QuickBooks import a PDF bank statement directly?

QuickBooks Online can: Upload from file accepts a PDF statement and uses AI to extract it for your review. QuickBooks Desktop can't. It imports bank transactions from QBO (Web Connect) files on supported versions, or IIF files. Utilly is useful when you want a file that's already verified against the statement balances, need Desktop, or want the same data in Excel for your workpapers.

Can I get a CSV for QuickBooks Online instead of a .QBO file?

Yes. The results page has a QuickBooks Online CSV in Intuit's 3-column bank upload format: Date, Description, Amount, with MM/DD/YYYY dates, a minus sign for money out and no Balance column. Characters Intuit's upload checklist says can block an import are removed from descriptions. Upload it under Bank transactions → Link account ▾ → Upload from file. A statement with more than 1,000 transactions comes as a .zip of files that each fit Intuit's upload limit. One credit covers every format.

Is my statement stored?

No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.

Do scanned statements work?

Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.

What if it doesn't balance?

You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.
