To convert a Discover card statement PDF to Excel, save the statement PDF from discover.com, upload it here, check that it balances, then download a CSV that opens in Excel: one row per transaction with a signed Amount. Free preview, no sign-up.
Utilly reads every transaction, then checks that opening balance + transactions = closing balance. You'll see Balanced ✓ or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.
Discover card statements list each transaction with a Trans. Date and a Post Date, grouped under labels such as Payments and Credits, Merchandise, Restaurants, Supermarkets and Gasoline, with the label printed beside the first row of each group. Payments and credits print with a minus sign. Utilly reads every group into one list, joins descriptions that wrap onto a second line, ignores the Cashback Bonus box and checks Previous Balance against New Balance.
Works with Discover Discover it, Discover it Secured, Miles, Chrome and other Discover card statements. Layout tested: Group labels beside the first row, Trans./Post dates, '$' printed apart, Cashback Bonus box.
Open the CSV in Excel to tag expenses, split business and personal charges, or hand your accountant a clean list of card spending.
Short answer: save the statement PDF from Statements on discover.com, upload it above, and check that it shows Balanced ✓. You get a CSV that opens in Excel with one row per transaction: purchases, fees and interest as negative amounts, payments and credits as positive ones, checked against the statement's Previous Balance and New Balance. Discover's mobile FAQ says discover.com shows up to 24 months of transactions under Recent Activity and Statements.
A Discover card statement opens with an Account Summary (Previous Balance, Payments and Credits, Purchases, Balance Transfers, Cash Advances, Fees Charged, Interest Charged, New Balance) next to the Payment Information and a Cashback Bonus box. The Transactions section has a Trans. Date and a Post Date on every row, and the rows are grouped. Each group's label (Payments and Credits, Merchandise, Restaurants, Gasoline…) is printed in the left column beside its first row, and so is a "$" set apart from that row's amount. Payments and credits print with a minus sign ("-180.00"), purchases without one.
| On the statement | In the Excel file |
|---|---|
| Account Summary, Payment Information, Credit Line, Late Payment Warning, the payment coupon | Not copied as rows. Previous Balance and New Balance are the two numbers the balance check uses. |
| The group label beside the first row ("Merchandise Sep 21 Sep 21 WAL-MART … $ 22.37") | Read past, so the first row of each group isn't lost. The label itself isn't copied into the description. |
| Payments and Credits ("-180.00"), including refunds and Cashback Bonus statement credits | Positive amounts: money paid in to the card. |
| Purchases in every group, on every page ("Continued on next page", heading repeated) | Negative amounts. Each row takes the Trans. Date (the day you bought it). The rows on every page come out as one list. |
| A description that wraps onto a second line (a reference such as "TX M260722-04-11873") | Joined to that transaction's description. Page headers and "Continued on next page" aren't joined. |
| Fees rows (for example LATE FEE) and Interest Charged rows | Negative amounts. An interest line printed without dates ("INTEREST CHARGE ON PURCHASES") gets the Close Date. The "TOTAL FEES / TOTAL INTEREST FOR THIS PERIOD" lines and the year-to-date totals are skipped, so nothing is counted twice. |
| The Cashback Bonus box, the Interest Charge Calculation table and the FICO® Credit Score page | Skipped. |
| Secured cards: the Security Deposit Account Activity table (Beginning Balance, transfers in, Ending Balance) | Not included. It's a separate deposit, not card activity, so it isn't added to the rows or the balance check. |
| Open Date: Dec 13, 2025 - Close Date: Jan 12, 2026 | The year for each "Mon D" date. On a statement that closes in January, December charges get the earlier year. |
| Account number ending in 3318 | Only the last 4 digits are kept, for the .QBO account ID. |
What this is based on: test statements built in the Discover card layout above (a Discover it Cash Back statement and a Discover it Secured statement that closes in January), with made-up names and transactions. We also ran a 2017 Discover it chrome statement that's posted publicly online as an example file. Before this page, it lost the first row of every group and read the security deposit table as card activity; now it reads all 32 rows and balances. We haven't run every Discover card through it: Discover it Business cards and statements that list authorized users' charges separately haven't been tested, and newer statement designs may differ (Discover is now a division of Capital One). That's why the balance check runs on every file: if yours doesn't balance, you see the difference before paying.

| Column | Contents |
|---|---|
| Date | Year first (2026-07-20), so Excel reads it as a date whatever your regional settings. |
| Description | The Discover description in one cell, including a line that wrapped. The group label (Merchandise, Restaurants…) isn't added. |
| Amount | Negative for purchases, fees and interest; positive for payments, refunds and credits. That's how QuickBooks and Xero want a credit card account. |
| Balance | Blank, because card statements don't print a running balance. |
Want spending as positive numbers? Add =-C2 in a new column and fill down. To check the file against the statement, =SUM() over the Amount column should equal Previous Balance minus New Balance. Rows keep the statement's order, group by group: sort by Date to see the month day by day.
| You need | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Recent transactions | The Discover app. Discover's mobile FAQ says it shows the last 20 transactions posted to your account. |
| Up to 24 months of transactions and statements | Log in at discover.com and use the Recent Activity and Statement links, as the same FAQ says. Discover's Card Account Center sign-up page says you can review statements for the past year, so check what your account shows and save the PDFs you need while they're there. |
| A statement you can't find online | Discover's paperless terms say there's no fee for paper copies of your billing statements; call 1-800-DISCOVER (1-800-347-2683). Paperless statements can arrive by email, in the Secure Inbox, on the website or in the Discover app. |
Sources: Discover: Mobile FAQ, Transactions (last 20 transactions in the app, up to 24 months on Discover.com), Discover Card Account Center (review statements for the past year), Discover: Paperless Statements (delivery, free paper copies, 1-800-DISCOVER), Discover: How long to keep credit card statements (downloading electronic copies of online statements; Discover, a division of Capital One NA). Checked Oct 25, 2026.
For older months, a closed card, or a statement a client emailed you, start from the PDF. The same Utilly conversion that gives you Excel also includes:
| You use | Download |
|---|---|
| QuickBooks Online or a Desktop version with Web Connect | The .QBO (a credit card Web Connect file), or the 3-column QuickBooks Online CSV. See Discover to QuickBooks. |
| QuickBooks Desktop without Web Connect | The .IIF (File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files). Type your card account's name from the Chart of Accounts on the results page first. |
| Quicken Classic for Windows | The QIF (File → File Import → QIF File). See statement PDF to QIF. |
| Xero | The Xero CSV or the OFX. See Discover to Xero. |
One credit covers every format of that statement. If a bank feed or an earlier download already brought in some of the same dates, start the PDF months where that stopped so nothing comes in twice.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No transactions found | The PDF is probably a scan or a photo. Save the statement again from Statements on discover.com. |
| "This PDF is password protected" | Save a copy without the password, or download the statement again, and upload that. |
| Not balanced | You see the difference before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, we refund it. |
| The rows aren't in date order | That's the statement's order: Discover groups rows by type. Sort the sheet by the Date column. |
| Amounts reversed after uploading the CSV to QuickBooks Online | Check the review screen before you accept. The .QBO is a credit card Web Connect file and avoids the guesswork. |
| You already have a CSV of Discover activity, not a PDF | No PDF needed: the CSV to QBO and CSV to Xero converters read it. Choose Credit card and check the signs in the preview. |
| You need several months in one sheet | Convert each statement on its own so each gets its own balance check, then paste the rows into one sheet. Every file has the same columns. |
More on card statements: converting a credit card statement PDF to Excel. The same Discover statement also converts to CSV. Other cards: American Express, Chase, Capital One, Citi. Bank statements: bank statement PDF to Excel.
Preview any statement free. A $9 pack unlocks 5 full statements in every format, with no expiry and no subscription. Bookkeepers with many clients can go unlimited for $19/month. See pricing.
You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).
Charges, fees and interest come out as negative amounts (money out) and payments, refunds and statement credits as positive. We then check Previous Balance − payments/credits + charges = New Balance, so you know every row was captured.
Copying from a PDF usually scrambles columns, merges descriptions and drops minus signs. Utilly keeps each transaction on one row with a signed amount, and the balance check tells you nothing was missed.
No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.
Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.
You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.
Discover's mobile FAQ says the app shows the last 20 posted transactions, and that discover.com shows up to 24 months under Recent Activity and Statements. Discover's Card Account Center sign-up page says you can review statements for the past year, so check what your account shows and save the PDFs you need. Discover's paperless terms say paper copies of billing statements are free (1-800-DISCOVER).
Amounts are signed by their effect on your cash: purchases, fees and interest are money out, payments, refunds and Cashback Bonus statement credits money in. That's how QuickBooks and Xero want a credit card account. For positive spending figures, use =-C2 in a new column.
Discover prints them in the left column beside the first transaction of each group. Utilly reads past them, so that first row isn't lost, and doesn't copy them into the file. Rows come out in the statement's order, group by group; sort by Date to see the month day by day.
No. The Security Deposit Account Activity table on a secured card statement is a separate Discover Bank deposit, not card activity, so it isn't added to the card's rows or the balance check. Only the card transactions are in the file.
Yes. The same conversion includes a credit card .QBO and an .IIF for QuickBooks and a QIF for Quicken Classic for Windows. That helps for older months or a statement a client emailed you, when all you have is the PDF.
