1. Download the PDF from Truist

  1. Sign in to Truist Online Banking at truist.com (or the Truist mobile app).
  2. Open Documents and pick the account.

  2. Open it in Excel. Dates and amounts come through as real dates and numbers, so you can sort, filter and pivot right away.

About Truist statements

Truist statements list checks, other withdrawals, debits and service charges, and deposits, credits and interest in separate sections, every amount printed without a sign. Utilly signs each row by its section, turns checks into "Check 1187" rows, keeps the spaces in descriptions (the Truist PDFs we checked have no space characters, only gaps between words), and checks the result against the previous and new balance in the Account summary.

Works with Truist checking statements. Layout tested: Sections by type, unsigned amounts, PDFs without space characters.

Why Excel?

Excel is the fastest way to review a statement, tag categories, or hand a clean transaction list to your accountant.

Short answer: save the statement PDF from Documents in Truist Online Banking, upload it above, and check that it shows Balanced ✓. You get a CSV that opens in Excel with one row per check, withdrawal and deposit, every Truist section combined into one signed Amount column. Truist keeps up to 7 years of deposit account statements online.

How to convert a Truist statement PDF to Excel

  1. Download the PDF: sign in to Truist Online Banking (or the Truist mobile app), open Documents, pick the account and open the statement, then save the PDF. Use the downloaded PDF, not a scan of a paper statement: scans don't work yet.
  2. Upload it above. Utilly reads the Checks, Other withdrawals, debits and service charges, and Deposits, credits and interest sections and checks previous balance − checks − withdrawals + deposits = new balance. The preview shows Balanced ✓, or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.
  3. Download the CSV and open it in Excel. Dates and amounts come in as real dates and numbers, in the statement's order.
  4. Save as .xlsx (File → Save As → Excel Workbook) if you want to keep formulas or formatting.

What we read on a Truist statement

A Truist checking statement opens with "Your account statement", the product name and account number (for example TRUIST BRIGHT CHECKING) and an Account summary. The transactions follow in three sections, each with its own DATE and AMOUNT($) columns and a "Total … = $" line: Checks, Other withdrawals, debits and service charges, and Deposits, credits and interest. There's no running balance next to the rows.

On the statementIn the Excel file
Account summary: "Your previous balance as of 08/26/2026", Checks, Other withdrawals, debits and service charges, Deposits, credits and interest, "Your new balance as of 09/25/2026 = $…"Not rows. The previous and new balance are the two numbers the balance check uses. The "as of" date of the new balance gives the statement's end date: Truist prints row dates as "09/04" with no year, so each row takes its year from it, and on a statement that runs from December into January, December rows get the earlier year. Average Posted Balance isn't counted.
Checks: DATE, CHECK #, AMOUNT($)One negative row per check, described as "Check 1187" and dated with the date shown.
Other withdrawals, debits and service charges: Zelle payments, bill payments, card purchases, IRS payments, the maintenance feeNegative amounts. Truist prints them without a minus sign, so Utilly takes the sign from the section heading.
Deposits, credits and interest: transfers in, mobile deposits, direct deposits, interestPositive amounts. A transfer from another account ends with a lone dash after the masked account ("ONLINE FROM ****4471 -"); the dash is dropped and doesn't make the amount negative.
Words set apart with no space characters between them (in the Truist PDFs we checked)Descriptions keep their spaces: "ZELLE PAYMENT TO Sample Lawn Care PAYMENT ID BBT400112233", not "ZELLEPAYMENTTOSample…".
Newer statements: the payment reference in its own column ("PAYMENT ID BBT400112233"), a "Page 1 of 3" header and a "§ PAGE 1 OF 3" footerThe reference stays at the end of the description. Page headers and footers aren't rows and aren't joined onto descriptions.
"Total checks = $ …", "Total other withdrawals, debits and service charges = $…", the Questions and Electronic fund transfers notes, How to Reconcile Your AccountSkipped. The Balance column is left empty: Truist doesn't print a balance next to each row, and we don't make balances up.

What this is based on: test statements built in Truist's older and newer checking layouts above, with made-up names and transactions, plus 19 Truist Bright Checking statements from January 2024 to October 2025 that a homeowners' association posts publicly: 200 of 200 rows read, including 11 checks, and all 19 balanced. Before this page, our reader balanced none of them. We don't link to them because they contain people's details. We haven't run every Truist statement style through it: Truist business checking, savings and money market statements, statements with several accounts, older BB&T and SunTrust statements and Truist credit card statements haven't been tested, and a scanned statement won't read. That's why the balance check runs on every file: if yours doesn't balance, you see the difference before paying.

QuickBooks and Quicken files for Truist

Truist connects to Quicken and QuickBooks Desktop through Direct Connect: in Quicken you pick "Truist Online Banking - DC", and Truist's guide has you register the data file in Truist Online Banking under Profile → Preferences, in the Quicken and QuickBooks tiles. Truist's business fee schedule lists Direct Connect at $9.95 a month for Quicken and $14.95 a month for QuickBooks on business accounts. If a connection covers the dates you need, use it. For months that only exist as statements, or the statements a client sent you, start from the PDF. The same Utilly conversion that gives you Excel also includes:

You useDownload
QuickBooks Online or a Desktop version with Web ConnectThe .QBO, or the 3-column QuickBooks Online CSV. See Truist to QuickBooks.
QuickBooks Desktop without Web ConnectThe .IIF (File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files).
Quicken Classic for WindowsThe QIF (File → File Import → QIF File). See bank statement PDF to QIF.
XeroThe Xero CSV or the OFX. See Truist to Xero.

One credit covers every format of that statement. If Direct Connect or an earlier download already brought in some of the same dates, start the PDF months where that stopped so nothing comes in twice.

Common problems

ProblemWhat to do
No transactions foundThe PDF is probably a scan or a photo. Download the statement again from Documents in Truist Online Banking.
"This PDF is password protected"Save a copy without the password, or download the statement again, and upload that.
Not balancedYou see the difference before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, we refund it.
The rows aren't in date orderThat's Truist's order: checks, then withdrawals, then deposits. Sort by the Date column.
The Balance column is emptyTruist doesn't print a running balance on its statements, so there's nothing to copy.
An older BB&T or SunTrust statementTry it: the balance check tells you straight away whether it read correctly. Those layouts haven't been tested yet.
You already have a CSV from Truist Online Banking, not a PDFNo PDF needed: the CSV to QBO and CSV to Xero converters read it.
You need several months in one sheetConvert each statement on its own so each gets its own balance check, then paste the rows into one sheet. Every file has the same columns.

FAQ

Questions

Can I convert a Truist statement PDF to Excel for free?

You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).

Why not just copy and paste from the PDF?

Copying from a PDF usually scrambles columns, merges descriptions and drops minus signs. Utilly keeps each transaction on one row with a signed amount, and the balance check tells you nothing was missed.

Is my statement stored?

No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.

Do scanned statements work?

Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.

What if it doesn't balance?

You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.

How far back can I download Truist statements?

Truist says paperless statements can be viewed and downloaded for up to 7 years for deposit accounts and up to 2 years for credit cards, and that the length of time for each product is shown in Truist Online Banking under Documents.

Why are deposits positive when Truist prints no plus sign?

Truist prints every amount without a sign and groups the rows into Checks, Other withdrawals, debits and service charges, and Deposits, credits and interest. Utilly takes the sign from the section: deposits, credits and interest are money in, checks and withdrawals are money out. The Account summary's previous and new balance then confirm it.

Will the descriptions keep their spaces?

Yes. The Truist statements we checked contain no space characters: the words are just placed a little apart, closer than many PDF text readers expect, so "ZELLE PAYMENT TO" can come out as "ZELLEPAYMENTTO" (our own reader did that before October 27, 2026). Utilly splits a word where one gap between its letters stands out, so descriptions keep their spaces.

Why are the rows grouped by type instead of by date?

Truist prints checks, withdrawals and deposits in separate sections, and the file keeps that order so you can tick it off against the PDF. Sort the sheet by the Date column to see the month day by day.

Can I get a QuickBooks or Quicken file instead?

Yes. The same conversion includes a .QBO and an .IIF for QuickBooks and a QIF for Quicken Classic for Windows. Truist also connects to Quicken and QuickBooks Desktop through Direct Connect ("Truist Online Banking - DC"); Truist's business fee schedule lists it at $9.95 a month for Quicken and $14.95 a month for QuickBooks on business accounts. For months that are only on the statements, start from the PDF.
