1. Download the PDF from PNC

  1. Sign on to PNC Online Banking at pnc.com (or the PNC Mobile app).
  2. Select Accounts, pick the account and open Account Quick View, then Statements and Documents.
  3. Select View PDF for the statement you need and save it.

Utilly reads every transaction, then checks that opening balance + transactions = closing balance. You'll see Balanced ✓ or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.

3. Import into Excel

  1. Download the CSV from your results page. It's formatted for Excel.
  2. Open it in Excel. Dates and amounts come through as real dates and numbers, so you can sort, filter and pivot right away.
  3. Save as .xlsx if you want to keep formulas or formatting.

About PNC statements

PNC statements print the amount before the description and without a sign, grouped into sections: Deposits and Other Additions, Checks and Substitute Checks, Banking/Debit Card Withdrawals and Purchases, Online and Electronic Banking Deductions and Other Deductions. Utilly signs each row by its section, turns checks into "Check 1043" rows, joins descriptions that wrap onto a second line and checks the result against the Beginning and Ending balance in the Balance Summary.

Works with PNC checking, Virtual Wallet and savings statements. Layout tested: Amount before the description, sections by type, Spend and Reserve on one statement.

Why Excel?

Excel is the fastest way to review a statement, tag categories, or hand a clean transaction list to your accountant.

Short answer: save the statement PDF from Statements and Documents in PNC Online Banking, upload it above, and check that it shows Balanced ✓. You get a CSV that opens in Excel with one row per deposit, check and withdrawal, every PNC section combined into one signed Amount column. PNC keeps up to 7 years of checking and savings statements online.

How to convert a PNC statement PDF to Excel

  1. Download the PDF: sign on to PNC Online Banking, select Accounts, pick the account, open Account Quick View, then Statements and Documents, and select View PDF. In the PNC Mobile app it's More → Statements and Documents → Online statements. Use the downloaded PDF, not a scan of a paper statement: scans don't work yet.
  2. Upload it above. Utilly reads every section of the Activity Detail and checks Beginning balance + deposits − deductions = Ending balance. The preview shows Balanced ✓, or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.
  3. Download the CSV and open it in Excel. Dates and amounts come in as real dates and numbers, in the statement's order.
  4. Save as .xlsx (File → Save As → Excel Workbook) if you want to keep formulas or formatting.

What we read on a PNC statement

A PNC checking statement (Virtual Wallet, Performance, Standard Checking) opens with an Account Summary: a Balance Summary table across the page, then a Transaction Summary of counts. The Activity Detail lists the transactions in sections by type, each with Date, Amount and Description columns, in that order, and a note on the right with how many rows the section has and their total. A Daily Balance Detail table comes last.

On the statementIn the Excel file
Header: "For the period 08/29/2026 to 09/28/2026", the primary account number, "Page 2 of 4" and "- continued" linesNot copied as rows. PNC prints row dates as "09/02" with no year, so each row takes its year from the statement period; on a statement that runs from December into January, December rows get the earlier year. Only the last 4 digits of the account number are kept, for the .QBO account ID.
Balance Summary: Beginning balance, Deposits and other additions, Checks and other deductions, Ending balance, on one line across the page (an overdrawn balance prints with a trailing minus, "7.00-")Not rows. Beginning and Ending balance are the two numbers the balance check uses; an overdrawn ending balance stays negative. Average monthly balance, Charges and fees, the Transaction Summary and the Interest Summary aren't counted.
Deposits and Other Additions: direct deposits, Zelle and mobile deposits, transfers in, debit card credits, "Interest Payment .31"Positive amounts. PNC prints amounts under $1 without a leading zero (".31"); they're read as $0.31.
Checks and Substitute Checks: Check number, Amount, Date paid, Reference numberOne negative row per check, described as "Check 1043" and dated with the date paid. The reference number isn't kept.
Banking/Debit Card Withdrawals and Purchases, Online and Electronic Banking Deductions, Other Deductions (service charges)Negative amounts. PNC prints them without a minus sign, so Utilly takes the sign from the section heading.
Amount before the description: "09/02 15.99 4417 Recurring Debit Card Sample Streaming", with the merchant or a reference number wrapping onto the next lineOne row: the amount is read first and the rest of the line is the description, with the wrapped line joined in.
"There were 5 other Banking Machine/Debit Card deductions totaling $171.52." in the right-hand columnIgnored. Those words sit on the same text lines as the rows, so Utilly cuts them off so they don't end up in descriptions or as amounts.
"… continued on next page", page headers, Daily Balance DetailSkipped. Rows on every page come out as one list. The Balance column is left empty: PNC prints one balance per day in a separate table, not next to each row, and we don't make balances up.
Virtual Wallet: Spend, then Reserve (and Growth), each with its own Account SummaryNot mixed in. The file is the first account, checked against its own balances, and the results page tells you the statement has more accounts.

What this is based on: test statements built in PNC's Virtual Wallet and Performance Checking layouts above, with made-up names and transactions, plus two PNC statements posted publicly: a 2024 Virtual Wallet Spend statement a converter site publishes as its example file (24 of 24 rows read, balanced to an overdrawn ending balance) and a 2022 Virtual Wallet With Performance Select statement filed as a court exhibit (39 of 39 rows read, including a check and a $0.31 interest payment, balanced). We don't link to them because they contain people's details. We haven't run every PNC statement style through it: PNC business checking and Treasury Management statements, statements listing several checks on one line, and PNC credit card statements haven't been tested, and a scanned statement won't read. That's why the balance check runs on every file: if yours doesn't balance, you see the difference before paying.

AmountPositive for Deposits and Other Additions, negative for checks, withdrawals and deductions. =SUM() over the column equals Ending balance minus Beginning balance.
BalanceEmpty: PNC doesn't print a balance next to each transaction.

How far back PNC statements go

You needWhere to get it
Checking and savings statementsStatements and Documents in PNC Online Banking or the PNC Mobile app. PNC says online statements are available for up to 7 years for checking and savings accounts.
PNC credit card statementsUp to 4 years online, PNC says. Card statements use a different layout; the tests behind this page cover checking statements.
A closed accountPNC says online statement history may not be available for accounts that have been closed, so save the PDFs before you close an account.
Check imagesPNC says you can view 24 months of check images in transaction history. They aren't part of the statement's transaction list; the check itself comes out as a "Check …" row.
Business accountsPNC's small business Online Banking page says you can view, print or download up to 7 years of account statements, and download account activity in Excel, Microsoft Money, Quicken or QuickBooks formats. PNC business statements haven't been tested in Utilly yet.

Sources: PNC: Online Statements & Documents (7 years for checking and savings, 4 years for credit cards, closed accounts, 24 months of check images, how to view statements), PNC: Online Banking with Quicken and QuickBooks (.QFX and .QBO exports via Web Connect), PNC: small business Online Banking and Bill Pay (7 years of statements, Data Export formats). QuickBooks and Quicken files for PNC

PNC Online Banking can export transactions as .QFX for Quicken or .QBO for QuickBooks, and PNC Bank is available as a connection in Quicken and QuickBooks. If that covers the dates you need, use it. PNC doesn't say how far back that export reaches, so for older months, or when all you have is the statements a client sent you, start from the statement PDF. The same Utilly conversion that gives you Excel also includes:

You useDownload
QuickBooks Online or a Desktop version with Web ConnectThe .QBO, or the 3-column QuickBooks Online CSV. See PNC to QuickBooks.
QuickBooks Desktop without Web ConnectThe .IIF (File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files).
Quicken Classic for WindowsThe QIF (File → File Import → QIF File). See bank statement PDF to QIF.
XeroThe Xero CSV or the OFX. See PNC to Xero.

One credit covers every format of that statement. If a bank feed or an earlier download already brought in some of the same dates, start the PDF months where that stopped so nothing comes in twice.

Common problems

ProblemWhat to do
No transactions foundThe PDF is probably a scan or a photo. Download the statement again from Statements and Documents in PNC Online Banking.
"This PDF is password protected"Save a copy without the password, or download the statement again, and upload that.
Not balancedYou see the difference before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, we refund it.
The results page says the statement has more accountsThe file holds the first account (usually Virtual Wallet Spend). Email us if you need the Reserve or Growth rows too.
The rows aren't in date orderThat's PNC's order: section by section. Sort by the Date column.
The Balance column is emptyPNC prints balances only in the Daily Balance Detail table, one per day, so the file doesn't copy them into rows.
You already have a CSV from PNC Online Banking, not a PDFNo PDF needed: the CSV to QBO and CSV to Xero converters read it.
You need several months in one sheetConvert each statement on its own so each gets its own balance check, then paste the rows into one sheet. Every file has the same columns.

FAQ

Questions

Can I convert a PNC statement PDF to Excel for free?

You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).

Why not just copy and paste from the PDF?

Copying from a PDF usually scrambles columns, merges descriptions and drops minus signs. Utilly keeps each transaction on one row with a signed amount, and the balance check tells you nothing was missed.

Is my statement stored?

No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.

Do scanned statements work?

Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.

What if it doesn't balance?

You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.

How far back can I download PNC statements?

PNC says online statements are available for up to 7 years for checking and savings accounts and up to 4 years for credit cards, and that statement history may not be available for accounts that have been closed. PNC also says you can view 24 months of check images in transaction history.

Why does the amount come before the description?

That's how PNC prints its Activity Detail: Date, Amount, then Description, with no minus signs. Utilly reads the amount first and the rest of the line as the description, and takes the sign from the section: Deposits and Other Additions are money in, checks and every Deductions or Withdrawals section are money out.

My Virtual Wallet statement has Spend and Reserve. What's in the file?

The first account on the statement, usually Spend, checked against its own Beginning and Ending balance. The Reserve (or Growth) account's rows aren't mixed in, and the results page tells you the statement has more accounts. Email us if you need those rows too.

Why are the rows grouped by type instead of by date?

PNC prints deposits, checks, card purchases and online payments in separate sections, and the file keeps the statement's order, section by section, so you can tick it off against the PDF. To see the month day by day, sort the sheet by the Date column.

Can I get a QuickBooks or Quicken file instead?

Yes. The same conversion includes a .QBO and an .IIF for QuickBooks and a QIF for Quicken Classic for Windows. PNC's own Online Banking can export transactions as .QFX for Quicken or .QBO for QuickBooks, but PNC doesn't say how far back that export goes. For older months, start from the statement PDF.
