No statement handy? See the result on a fictional one first:

1. Download the PDF from U.S. Bank

  1. Sign in at usbank.com.
  2. Go to My accounts, then My documents, and choose Statements.
  3. Pick the account and the statement date, then save the PDF.

2. Upload and verify

Utilly reads every transaction, then checks that opening balance + transactions = closing balance. You'll see Balanced ✓ or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.

3. Import into Xero

  1. Download the Xero CSV from your results page.
  2. In Xero, go to Accounting → Bank accounts, click the menu icon (⋮) on the account and choose Import a Statement.
  3. Upload the file. The columns already match Xero's CSV statement template, and dates are written year first (YYYY/MM/DD), one of the date formats Xero lists, so the day and month can't be swapped. If Xero asks for the date format, choose YYYY/MM/DD, then check a date after the 12th on the Review screen.

About U.S. Bank statements

U.S. Bank statements group transactions by type: Customer Deposits, Other Deposits, Card Withdrawals, Other Withdrawals and Checks Presented, with withdrawals printed with a trailing minus ("500.00-") and checks and deposit tickets often two to a line. Utilly combines every section into one dated list, signs each row by its section, skips the Balance Summary and checks the result against the Beginning and Ending Balance.

Works with U.S. Bank checking, savings and business checking statements. Layout tested: Sections by type, trailing-minus withdrawals, checks two to a line.

Why Xero?

Xero (US and Canada) can import some PDF statements directly. Elsewhere, and for scans or layouts it can't read, it needs CSV, OFX or QIF. The Xero CSV is laid out the way Xero expects, and Utilly has already checked it against your statement balances.

Rather import an OFX file than a CSV? The same results page has one, and Xero takes it under Import a Statement with no column mapping: see bank statement PDF to OFX.

Import failing, dates swapped or a balance that won't match? See Xero bank statement import errors and how to fix them.

Already have a CSV or Excel export from your bank? The free CSV to Xero converter turns Debit and Credit columns into one signed Amount and writes Xero's import layout.

FAQ

Questions

Can I convert a U.S. Bank statement PDF to Xero for free?

You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).

Can Xero import a PDF bank statement?

In the US and Canada, Xero can import some PDF statements directly (Bank accounts → the account's menu icon → Import a Statement). Outside those regions, or when Xero can't read the file, use the Xero CSV from Utilly. It's checked against your statement balances first.

Is my statement stored?

No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.

Do scanned statements work?

Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.

What if it doesn't balance?

You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.
