To convert a Citizens statement PDF to Excel, save the PDF from the Document Center in Citizens Online Banking, upload it, check that it balances, then download a CSV that opens in Excel: one row per check, withdrawal and deposit, with signed amounts. Free preview, no sign-up.
Utilly reads every transaction, then checks that opening balance + transactions = closing balance. You'll see Balanced ✓ or exactly how far off it is, before you pay anything.
Citizens statements group transactions by type, Checks (printed two across), Withdrawals & Debits (ATM/Purchases and Other Withdrawals & Debits) and Deposits & Credits, with the amount before the description and no sign on any amount. Utilly signs each row by its section, turns checks into "Check 1021" rows, joins wrapped merchant lines, skips the recap column down the right-hand side, and checks the result against the Balance Calculation's Previous and Current Balance.
Works with Citizens checking statements. Layout tested: Sections by type, unsigned amounts, amount before the description.
Excel is the fastest way to review a statement, tag categories, or hand a clean transaction list to your accountant.
Short answer: save the statement PDF from the Document Center in Citizens Online Banking, upload it above, and check that it shows Balanced ✓. You get a CSV that opens in Excel with one row per check, withdrawal and deposit, withdrawals negative and deposits positive, even though Citizens prints every amount without a sign.
A Citizens "Checking Account Statement" (One Deposit Checking, for example) gives the period as "Beginning September 01, 2026 through September 30, 2026", then a Balance Calculation box, then TRANSACTION DETAILS grouped by type. Amounts carry no sign: the section they're in says which way the money went.
| On the statement | In the Excel file |
|---|---|
| Balance Calculation: Previous Balance, Checks −, Withdrawals & Debits −, Deposits & Credits +, Current Balance = | Not rows. Previous Balance and Current Balance are the two numbers the balance check uses. |
| A Checks table printed two across ("Check # Amount Date Check # Amount Date") | One row per check: "Check 1021", -450.00, with the date it cleared. |
| Withdrawals & Debits, split into ATM/Purchases and Other Withdrawals & Debits, each with Date, Amount, Description (the amount comes before the description) | Negative amounts, description in one cell: "7781 DBT PURCHASE - 120044 SAMPLE GROCERY PROVIDENCE RI", -64.18. |
| Deposits & Credits, same columns | Positive amounts: payroll, mobile deposits, fee refunds, interest. |
| A card purchase whose merchant city wraps onto a second line | Joined onto the same row's description. |
| The recap down the right-hand side ("Total Withdrawals & Debits", "Total Deposits & Credits", "Current Balance" with the amount below), "Please See Additional Information on Next Page" and "… Continued" headings | Skipped. They're never joined onto a description or read as a row. |
| Dates printed as "09/17" (no year) | Full dates (2026-09-17), with the year taken from the "through" date. On a statement that runs from December into January, December rows get the earlier year. |
| The Daily Balance table at the end | Not rows. Citizens doesn't print a running balance beside each transaction, so the Balance column is left empty and the statement's own totals do the checking. |
What this is based on: test statements built in Citizens' layout above, with made-up names and transactions (two checks, a section continued onto the next page, wrapped descriptions, and a December-to-January statement), plus two public Citizens checking statements. One is a real One Deposit Checking statement that had been re-saved on a phone: 30 of 31 rows read, and the one row we couldn't read (its date is an unreadable character in that PDF's text) showed up as a $700.00 difference in the balance check, exactly that row's amount. The other is an example statement whose own printed totals disagree with each other, so it can't balance: all 51 of its rows were read, including the check, and its deposits match its "Total Deposits & Credits" to the cent. We don't link to either because they contain people's details. We haven't run every Citizens statement style through it: Citizens Quest, Private Client and business checking, savings and money market statements, and Citizens credit card statements haven't been tested. The balance check tells you straight away whether yours read correctly.

| Column | Contents |
|---|---|
| Date | Year first (2026-09-08), so Excel reads it as a date whatever your regional settings. |
| Description | The Citizens description in one cell, wrapped lines joined. Checks read "Check" plus the check number. |
| Amount | Negative for checks, card purchases, ATM cash, transfers out and fees; positive for deposits, refunds and interest. =SUM() over the column equals Current Balance minus Previous Balance. |
| Balance | Empty: Citizens prints balances only in the Daily Balance table, not beside each row. |
The rows keep the statement's order, section by section (checks, then withdrawals, then deposits), so you can tick them off against the PDF. To see the month day by day, sort by the Date column. Want money in and money out in two columns? Use =MAX(C2,0) and =MAX(-C2,0).
| You need | Where to get it |
|---|---|
| Statements from the last few years | The Document Center in Citizens Online Banking or the Citizens mobile app. Citizens' checking disclosures say up to 7 years of statements and check images are there. |
| A statement the Document Center doesn't show | Citizens' Online Banking FAQ still says up to 18 months are available immediately and older ones can be ordered through "Contact Us". If yours stops short of 7 years, order the older months that way. |
| Recent activity, not a statement | The Export button on the account (personal) or "Download Account Data" on the account history page (business). Citizens' FAQ says up to 18 months of transaction history can be viewed. |
Sources: Citizens: Checking Disclosures ("View statements online": up to 7 years of statements and check images in the Document Center), Citizens: Online Banking & Bill Pay FAQs (Document Center, 18 months of statements online and older ones through Contact Us, 18 months of transaction history, the Export button for Quicken), Citizens: Business Accounting Software Compatibility (Web Connect for Quicken, Quicken for Mac and QuickBooks). Checked Oct 27, 2026.
Citizens Online Banking can export recent transactions for Quicken and QuickBooks (Web Connect). If that export covers the dates you need, use it. For months it doesn't reach, statements a client sent you as PDFs, or when you want every row tied to the statement's Current Balance, start from the PDF. The same Utilly conversion that gives you Excel also includes:
| You use | Download |
|---|---|
| Quicken Classic for Windows | The QIF (File → File Import → QIF File). See bank statement PDF to QIF. |
| QuickBooks Online or a Desktop version with Web Connect | The .QBO, or the 3-column QuickBooks Online CSV. See Citizens to QuickBooks. |
| QuickBooks Desktop without Web Connect | The .IIF (File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files). |
| Xero | The Xero CSV or the OFX. See Citizens to Xero. |
One credit covers every format of that statement. If an export or a bank feed already brought in some of the same dates, start the PDF months where that stopped so nothing comes in twice.
| Problem | What to do |
|---|---|
| No transactions found | The PDF is probably a scan or a photo. Download the statement again from the Document Center in Citizens Online Banking. |
| "This PDF is password protected" | Save a copy without the password, or download the statement again, and upload that. |
| Not balanced | You see the difference before paying. A difference equal to one amount on the statement usually means that row couldn't be read; check it against the PDF. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, we refund it. |
| The rows aren't in date order | That's the statement's order (checks, withdrawals, deposits). Sort by the Date column. |
| A Quest, business or credit card statement | Try it: the balance check tells you straight away whether it read correctly. Those layouts haven't been tested yet. |
| You need several months in one sheet | Convert each statement on its own so each gets its own balance check, then paste the rows into one sheet. Every file has the same columns. |

You can preview every statement free: we show the balance check and the first 5 transactions with no sign-up. Unlocking the full file costs one credit ($9 for 5 statements).
Copying from a PDF usually scrambles columns, merges descriptions and drops minus signs. Utilly keeps each transaction on one row with a signed amount, and the balance check tells you nothing was missed.
No. The PDF is read in memory and never written to disk, and extracted results are deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.
Not yet. PDFs downloaded from online banking are text-based and work well. Scans and phone photos need OCR, which is on the roadmap.
You'll see exactly how far off it is before paying. If a paid conversion is wrong and we can't fix it, email support@version1.io for a refund.
Citizens' checking disclosures say up to 7 years of statements and check images are in the Document Center of Online Banking or the Citizens mobile app. Its Online Banking FAQ still says 18 months are available immediately, with older statements ordered through Contact Us, so if the Document Center stops short, order the older months that way.
Negative. Each amount is signed by the section it's printed in: Checks and Withdrawals & Debits are negative, Deposits & Credits are positive. The total is then checked against the Balance Calculation, Previous Balance minus checks and withdrawals plus deposits, to the Current Balance.
Yes. The Checks table, printed two across (check number, amount, date), becomes one row per check, such as "Check 1021" for -450.00 on the date it cleared.
Citizens doesn't print a running balance beside each transaction, only a Daily Balance table at the end. Utilly leaves the Balance column empty rather than guessing, and the statement's own Previous Balance and Current Balance do the checking.
If the Online Banking export covers the dates you need, use it. Start from the PDF for months the export doesn't reach (Citizens' FAQ says up to 18 months of transaction history can be viewed), for statements a client sent you as PDFs, or when every row should tie to the statement's Current Balance. The same conversion includes a QIF for Quicken Classic for Windows, a .QBO and an .IIF for QuickBooks, and a Xero CSV.
