ProperConvert alternatives (2026): an honest comparison for bank statements

Updated October 24, 2026 · 8 min read · By the Utilly team

The main ProperConvert alternatives for bank statements are DocuClipper, MoneyThumb Online, QuickBooks Online's own PDF upload and Utilly. For a few text PDFs now and then, Utilly's $9 one-time pack costs least; for unlimited conversions on your own computer, ProperConvert's $19.99 a month is hard to beat.

Who wrote this: Utilly, which is one of the alternatives below. We've tried to be fair: every ProperConvert and competitor price and feature was checked on that vendor's own website on October 23, 2026 and is linked at the source, and we say plainly where ProperConvert and the others do things ours doesn't (scanned statements, converting entirely on your own computer, QFX for Quicken, direct push into QuickBooks Online). Prices change, so confirm before you buy.

What ProperConvert costs and does

ProperConvert is ProperSoft's desktop app for Windows and Mac. One licence covers every converter and format, with no page, statement or transaction limits. From its pricing page on October 23, 2026 (US dollars):

  • Where it runs: on your own computer, Windows 10/11 or macOS (download page). ProperSoft says statements are never uploaded to the cloud. There's also a portable Windows version for computers where you don't have admin rights.
  • What it reads: PDF statements, including scanned ones and PDFs locked with a view password; CSV, Excel and text files; QBO, QFX and OFX downloads; QIF and QMTF exports (product page).
  • What it writes: QBO (Web Connect) and IIF for QuickBooks, QBJ journal entries mapped from Excel, QFX and QIF for Quicken, OFX and CSV for Xero, Sage, Wave and others, plus Excel, CSV or the clipboard. You review, edit or exclude transactions on screen first, and payee renaming rules clean up bank descriptions.
  • Licence: one person on one device (a computer or a remote terminal). To move to a new computer you deactivate it on the old one first.
  • Trial and refunds: the free trial never expires and previews every transaction, but the saved file holds at most 10 transactions. There's a 14-day money-back guarantee; on recurring plans only the first order qualifies.

No more one-time licences

If you bought ProperSoft software years ago with a one-time licence, this is the big change. On its pricing page ProperSoft explains that it stopped selling perpetual licences in 2023, because banks keep changing their statement layouts and keeping the converter working is ongoing work. Now everything is a monthly or yearly subscription, and when a subscription ends the app goes back to the free trial: it still opens and parses your statements, but saves only 10 transactions per file. ProperSoft's own advice for a one-off job is to take the monthly plan and cancel when you're done.

Why people look for an alternative

  • Installing and licensing per device. It runs on Windows and Mac only, one licence per user and device. If you work on a Chromebook, switch between an office PC and a laptop, or can't install software on a client's or employer's machine, a web tool is simpler.
  • Low or occasional volume. $19.99 a month is cheap for unlimited use, but if you convert a handful of statements a year, you pay for each month you keep it (or resubscribe each time).
  • The end of paying once. Owners of an old perpetual licence whose bank changed its layout now need a subscription to get the fix.
  • Teams beyond three people. The Team plan covers three users or devices; more than that is an Enterprise quote, and each person still installs the app.
  • Wanting it online. ProperConvert saves a file you import yourself. If you want one shared web workspace or transactions pushed straight into QuickBooks Online or Xero, that's a different kind of tool.

If none of these apply, and especially if your statements are scanned, you need QFX for Quicken, or client statements must never leave your computer, ProperConvert is probably still the right tool.

A 12-month catch-up, and a steady month, on each

A common one-off job: a new client hands you 12 monthly PDF statements for one checking account, about 4 pages each (48 pages).

  • ProperConvert: one month at $19.99, unlimited pages, on one computer. The free trial won't do it, because each saved file stops at 10 transactions.
  • Utilly: 12 credits. Three $9 packs ($27, with 3 credits left that never expire), or one month of Pro at $19 and cancel.
  • DocuClipper: 48 pages fits Starter 60, so one month at $29, then cancel.
  • MoneyThumb Online: 12 conversions. The $49.95 Standard plan (20 a month) covers it in one month; on the $24.95 plan it takes three months ($74.85).
  • QuickBooks Online upload: no extra cost if you're on QuickBooks Online, but you review and save 12 statements one by one.

Now a steady workload: 30 statements of about 4 pages every month (120 pages). ProperConvert stays at $19.99 a month, or about $15 a month on the $179.99 yearly plan. Utilly Pro is $19 a month. DocuClipper needs Starter 120 at $39. MoneyThumb needs the $99.95 Pro plan (60 a month), since Standard covers only 20, or $799.95 a year (about $67 a month) for 800 conversions. For one person converting a lot on one computer, ProperConvert's yearly plan is the cheapest option here; Utilly Pro costs about the same with nothing to install.

Who should pick what

  • Stay with ProperConvert if client statements must never leave your computer, your statements are scanned, you need QFX for Quicken or QBJ journal entries, or you convert a lot on one machine and want unlimited pages for a flat fee.
  • Pick Utilly if you convert a few text-based PDF statements now and then, want nothing to install, want each one checked against the statement balance, need an .IIF for QuickBooks Desktop 2023 or a Xero CSV alongside the .QBO, and don't want a subscription. Try the free preview first.
  • Pick DocuClipper if several people need access to one web workspace, you also extract invoices and receipts, or you want direct push into Xero as well as QuickBooks Online.
  • Pick MoneyThumb Online if your statements are long or scanned and you mostly need .qbo files or direct push into QuickBooks Online; it charges per statement, not per page.
  • Try QuickBooks Online's upload first if you're on QuickBooks Online and only have a few statements.

Whatever you choose, check one equation before importing: opening balance + deposits − withdrawals = closing balance, to the cent. Our free statement balance checker does this in your browser for a CSV from any converter, and the IIF file checker catches problems before QuickBooks Desktop does. On QuickBooks Desktop 2023, see importing after bank feeds stopped; getting a .qbo rejected? See QBO Web Connect import errors.

What Utilly does and doesn't do

Does: works in any browser with nothing to install, reads text-based PDF bank and credit card statements (tested on Chase, Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Capital One and Mercury bank statements and Amex, Chase, Capital One and Citi cards), checks the result against the statement's balances, and writes QBO, IIF, QuickBooks Online CSV, Xero CSV, QIF, OFX, CSV and Excel from the same upload. It also converts CSV, Excel, OFX and QIF files to QBO, IIF or Xero CSV (CSV to QBO, free up to 100 rows). Try a sample statement or upload your own for a free preview.

Doesn't: run offline or on your own computer (statement PDFs are uploaded to our server, processed in memory and never written to disk, and results are deleted after an hour), read scanned or photographed statements, read statements in languages other than English, connect to your bank or push into QuickBooks or Xero (you download a file and import it), write QFX or QBJ, offer an API, or sell a desktop app. If you need those, ProperConvert or one of the other tools above is the better fit.

FAQ

What is the best ProperConvert alternative?

It depends on why you're leaving. For a few text-based PDF statements now and then with nothing to install, Utilly ($9 one-time for 5 statements, no subscription) costs least and also writes IIF and Xero CSV. For several users in one web workspace, or invoices and receipts too, DocuClipper (from $29/month for 60 pages). For long or scanned statements with direct push into QuickBooks Online, MoneyThumb Online (from $24.95/month for 5 statements). QuickBooks Online users can try its built-in PDF upload first.

How much does ProperConvert cost in 2026?

ProperConvert is $19.99/month or $179.99/year for one user and device, and the Team plan is $49.98/month or $449.97/year for 3 users or devices, with unlimited pages and statements and all formats included. Enterprise is priced on request. The free trial never expires but saves at most 10 transactions per file. Checked on ProperSoft's pricing page October 23, 2026.

Can you still buy a one-time ProperConvert licence?

No. ProperSoft says it stopped selling perpetual licences in 2023; ProperConvert is now a monthly or yearly subscription. When a subscription ends, the app goes back to the free trial, which still opens and parses statements but saves only 10 transactions per file.

Is there a ProperConvert alternative that works in a browser?

Yes. Utilly, DocuClipper and MoneyThumb Online are web apps, so they work on any computer, including a Chromebook, with nothing to install. The trade-off is that your statement is uploaded to the vendor's server, while ProperConvert converts on your own computer.

Is there a free ProperConvert alternative?

QuickBooks Online's own Upload from file reads PDF and image statements at no extra cost if you're on QuickBooks Online. Utilly's free preview runs the full balance check and shows the first 5 transactions, and it converts CSV, Excel, OFX and QIF files to QBO up to 100 rows free. DocuClipper's 14-day trial covers up to 120 pages with no card.

Which ProperConvert alternatives make IIF or QFX files?

Utilly and DocuClipper write IIF for QuickBooks Desktop, which matters for Desktop 2023 after Intuit ended Web Connect uploads on May 31, 2026. For Quicken QFX, DocuClipper writes it and MoneyThumb sells it as a separate product; Utilly doesn't write QFX (it writes QIF).

Should I stay with ProperConvert?

Often, yes. If client statements must never leave your computer, your statements are scanned, you need QFX or QBJ files, or you convert a lot on one machine, ProperConvert's unlimited licence at $19.99/month or $179.99/year is hard to beat.
