1. Upload

Any bank, card or app export: CSV (comma, semicolon or tab), Excel .xlsx, OFX/QFX/QBO downloads or Quicken QIF exports.

2. Check the mapping

We detect the date, description and amount (or debit/credit) columns and the date format. Change anything, flip signs, and preview the result.

3. Download

Get .QBO for QuickBooks, .IIF for QuickBooks Desktop, .QIF for Quicken, a Xero CSV, or a clean CSV. Same file, any format.

Why QBO?

QuickBooks doesn't import QIF. Intuit's Desktop help says Web Connect only works with .qbo files, and QuickBooks Online's Upload from file takes QBO, QFX, OFX, CSV and TXT files, not QIF. So a Quicken history, or a bank download offered only as QIF, has to be converted first. The same preview also gives you an .IIF for QuickBooks Desktop without Web Connect, a Xero CSV or a clean CSV for Excel.

.QBO import failing with OL-222, OL-221 or "unable to verify the Financial Institution"? See QuickBooks .QBO Web Connect import errors.

How to convert QIF to QBO

  1. Export the QIF. In Quicken for Windows: File → File Export → QIF File. Pick one account under Quicken Account to Export from, set the dates and tick Transactions under Include in Export (steps from Quicken's help). A bank's QIF download works the same way.
  2. Upload it above. We read each transaction's date, amount and payee, and tell bank registers from credit card registers.
  3. Check the preview. Money out should be negative. If the dates are day-first (01/09/2026 for 1 September), pick that date format in the preview.
  4. Download the .QBO and back up your company file.
  5. QuickBooks Desktop (a version that still has online banking): File → Utilities → Import → Web Connect Files, choose the file and pick the account. QuickBooks Online: Bank transactions → Link account ▾ → Upload from file.

What carries over from the QIF file

One transaction in a Quicken QIF export:

D9/ 1'26
U-6,420.18
T-6,420.18
PACH DEBIT GUSTO PAYROLL 0912
LPayroll
^

becomes this in the .QBO (account "Business Checking"):

<STMTTRN><TRNTYPE>DEBIT<DTPOSTED>20260901120000<TRNAMT>-6420.18
<FITID>202609015DCA91C8B0BC00<NAME>ACH DEBIT GUSTO PAYROLL 0912
<MEMO>ACH DEBIT GUSTO PAYROLL 0912</STMTTRN>
In the QIFIn the .QBO
D (date), including Quicken's 9/ 1'26 styleThe same date, written at noon.
T (amount), or U when T is missingThe same signed amount, two decimals, thousands commas removed. TRNTYPE is CREDIT for money in and DEBIT for money out.
P (payee), or M (memo) when there's no payeeNAME cut to 32 characters, with the full text in MEMO. A check with no payee or memo is described as CHECK and its number.
!Type:CCard registerA credit card Web Connect file. Import it into a Credit Card account.
!Account nameUsed to make the account ID, so the same account gets the same ID every month. Or type your own.
Opening Balance entryLeft out. It's the register's starting balance, not a bank transaction.
L (category), S/E/$ (split lines), N (check number), C (cleared), A (address)Dropped. A .QBO has no place for them. A split transaction comes through as one line for its total.
BalancesA QIF has none, so the .QBO ending balance is 0.00. Reconcile against your statements.

Every file says bank ID 3000, so QuickBooks Desktop may label the download Wells Fargo. The transactions still go into the account you pick. Each transaction gets an ID made from the account, date, amount and description, so converting the same QIF again gives the same IDs and Desktop skips the repeats.

Which QIF files work

  • Bank, cash, credit card and other asset or liability registers (!Type:Bank, Cash, CCard, Oth A, Oth L).
  • One account per file. If a file holds several accounts' transactions, we say so and list them instead of mixing them together.
  • Investment registers (!Type:Invst) aren't converted. Category, class and memorized payee lists in the file are ignored.
  • Month-first and day-first dates, two- or four-digit years. Check the date format in the preview.
  • Free up to 100 transactions, and up to 20,000 per file. QuickBooks Online takes up to 1,000 transactions and 350 KB per upload, so export long histories in smaller date ranges.

Common problems

ProblemFix
"That QIF file holds 2 accounts"Export again with one account selected, and convert each account's file separately.
"No transactions found in that QIF file"The export had only lists. Tick Transactions under Include in Export and export again.
Dates in the wrong monthThe file uses day-first dates. Choose %d/%m/%Y (or %d/%m/%y) as the date format in the preview.
"Unable to verify the Financial Institution information for this download", or Desktop 2023 won't take any .QBODownload the .IIF from the same preview instead and import it under File → Utilities → Import → IIF Files. IIF import doesn't check a bank ID.
OL-222, OL-221 or another OL errorSee QuickBooks .QBO Web Connect import errors.
Transactions imported twiceThe file overlapped dates already in QuickBooks. See duplicate transactions after importing.

FAQ

Questions

Is it free?

Yes for files up to 100 transactions: no sign-up, no watermark. Bigger files (multi-month catch-up work) use 1 credit from the same $9 / 5-credit pack as our PDF converter, and the preview is always free.

How do I import the QBO file?

QuickBooks Desktop: Banking → Bank Feeds → Import Web Connect Files (signed in to your Intuit Account), then pick the account. QuickBooks Online: Bank transactions (All apps → Accounting) → Link account ▾ → Upload from file. If your Desktop version no longer accepts Web Connect files, download the .IIF instead.

Can I import files for several accounts into one QuickBooks company file?

Yes. Type each account's last 4 digits or a nickname in the preview, under Account last 4 or nickname (QBO), and use the same one every month. Each .QBO then carries that account's own ID, and each transaction's ID is made from its date, amount, description and account. QuickBooks keeps the accounts apart, and when two files overlap, Desktop skips the transactions it has already imported (as long as they're worded the same in both). Leave the box blank and we use the account number's last 4 digits from an OFX/QFX/QBO file, or an ID made from the file's columns and account type.

What ending balance does the .QBO show?

The last balance in your file's Balance column, if that column matches every row, or the ending balance inside an OFX, QFX or QBO file you upload. Otherwise 0.00, because the format requires a balance and we won't guess one. Reconcile against your statement either way.

Which columns do I need?

A date, a description and either one signed Amount column or separate Debit and Credit columns. We detect them automatically and you can change the mapping before downloading.

Is my file stored?

No. Files are processed in memory and deleted after 1 hour. We never use your data for AI training.

Can I try it without uploading my own file?

Yes. Click a sample button under the upload box. It opens a made-up export from a fictional bank in the same preview your own file gets, and every format is free to download, so you can test an import in a test or backup company file first. Don't import a sample into your real books.

Does QuickBooks import QIF files?

No. QuickBooks Desktop's Web Connect only reads .qbo files, and QuickBooks Online's Upload from file takes QBO, QFX, OFX, CSV and TXT files. Convert the QIF to a .QBO (or to an .IIF for Desktop) first.

Are my Quicken categories and splits kept?

No. A .QBO carries only bank transactions: date, amount and description. Categories, split lines, tags, cleared status and check numbers are dropped, and a split transaction comes through as one line for its total. Set up bank rules in QuickBooks to categorize by payee after the import.

My QIF file has several accounts. What do I do?

Export one account per file: in Quicken for Windows, File → File Export → QIF File, pick the account under Quicken Account to Export from, and tick Transactions. Upload each file separately and import it into its own account in QuickBooks.

Can I convert QIF to CSV or Excel?

Yes. Upload the QIF here and choose Clean CSV as the output. You get Date, Description, Amount and Balance columns (Balance is blank, since a QIF has no balances) that open directly in Excel or Google Sheets.
